  Reflection on Education

When I think back on my education, which covers a 20-year period including 4 years of post-college graduate education, I have mixed feelings in terms of what I got out of all that time. On the one hand, I feel extremely blessed, not only to have had the full support of parents that were actively involved in my education, but also for the opportunity to attend top academic institutions beginning from a young age, which again came as a result of the hard work and sacrifices made by my family. On the other hand, I feel like I could have gotten so much more out of school and yearn for the chance to do it all over again.

We spend so much of our time in school trying to “do well”, whether that means getting good grades, making the football team, becoming first violin, or being an editor on the school newspaper. At the schools with more money, we have many opportunities and as ambitious students we take advantage of them and devote countless hours to honing our skills across a wide variety of activities. In college we begin to specialize and do so even more in graduate school. Sometime around our mid-twenties we emerge a well rounded and educated young adult, highly skilled in the art of being a student. Of course we have no real world experience, but that’s fine, because theoretically our education has given us the tools to figure it out on the job, which is indeed what everyone ends up doing, doctors, lawyers, consultants, and bankers alike.

Perhaps 4 to 5 years into our professional lives, when many of us find ourselves over specialized and in somewhat of a rut, we look back at our education. And what I realize is that those who had a good education look back and wish they could do it again. Even though we think we did so much in school, we can now see that we just scratched the surface of all the opportunities we had. When you can look back and say, “wow, I did a lot in school, but there was so much I was too immature to take advantage of,” that’s the sign of a good education. A good education teaches us to be curious, to try new things, to dive deep into things that inspire us. A good education makes us realize how little we know now and how stupid we were when we were younger. Although it might sound strange, it’s my personal belief that a good education will give you a profound sense of confusion and put you somewhat at unease, because you’ll be inspired by so many different things and constantly be pulled in different directions – and to me that’s a good thing.

If you look back on your education and think, “yea I pretty much got everything out of it that was possible,” then either your school didn’t have enough resources to really challenge you or you missed out on the most important lesson, which is to always keep learning.

  Advices for Students of Accounting

Accounting as a major is a very popular choice for female students. Its promising employment opportunity after college education makes it quite attractive to many international students who normally have disadvantage in labor market. For those students who majored in accounting as undergraduate study and want to further study in graduate school, whether to continue in accounting or pursuit other direction, is a tough choice.

According to KCG’s advisors of tenure professors of Finance and Accounting from some top universities of America, the best choice for those accounting majored undergraduate students who want to pursuit finance / accounting career path, is to apply for a Master of Finance program. With both accounting and finance equipped, those students should have better opportunities in job market when they graduate from graduate school. The logic behind this advice is pretty clear, accounting and finance are the two most important and indispensable parts for anyone who takes career path in financial industry. With solid accounting training in undergraduate education and a further training on financial analysis and modeling in graduate school, you will prevail in your future career.

  A Life Style of Professionalism

Professionalism is a term widely used. According to my understanding, it has few important components. Number one is attitude. Professionals hold dearly a dedicated attitude towards what they do, either according to an agreement or a promise. Behind this attitude, there is a character of persistence. Until they achieve their goal of delivery of their duties, they will not stop working. Number two is quality of the deliverables. Professionals care about their qualities of work or delivery which should be consistent with their reputations in the market. Obviously, a person’s name as a professional in work basically defines his or her status in business society. To achieve high standard quality, professionals should keep polishing their tools and skills restlessly. Finally, professionalism is a spirit and life style. For those things significant to you in your life, you can treat them seriously as a professional or you can just approach it with a mediocre mindset. You will experience entirely different consequences and reflections as a life. From occupational point of view, the knight from ancient times and sportsman in nowadays are good examples of professionals.

One of the most representative sportsmen as a professional, for whom I admire most, is Rafael Nadal. Apparently, he has achieved historic status in the tennis sport of all time in terms of his dominate position as “King of Clay” and 8 times winner of French Open in a row etc. What he demonstrated is far beyond than those records. Nadal always holds a positive attitude, especially in tough times when facing physical injures and critical set back in the finals of Grand Slam. As he said, he always focuses on each coming ball and tries his best to strike back. His positive attitude is not limited to his view towards adversity. He treats other people, especially his most dreadful opponents, nicely. You can tell his sincerity and genuine kindness towards people in general. If you take a look back his growth path, you can see clearly his constant improvement on skills. He used to be the winner in clay court, but not in grass and hard court. Now in the season of 2013, he has won consecutively all the matches he attended in hard courts, including Grand Slam of US Open. Either inside or outside of court, Nadal behaves excellently as a professional player and as an exemplary young man. His humble words shine where he goes and his persistent spirit inspire many people, especially younger generation.

RFP for Soliciting Partner Schools from USA

International Curriculum / School is already popular in China and it will keep growing fast in next few years, expanding from top tier cities to second tier and third tier cities, from top tier high schools to second tier high schools. For those Chinese schools which are seriously looking for partner schools from USA, Canada or UK, not just outsourcing everything to third party, a formal RFP (Request for Proposal) is a very important first step towards this goal of finding a good partner from western countries. To prepare a RFP, the Chinese school should be clear about what they are going to do with their project in terms of goals, brand, collaborative model, curriculum selection, faculties and their availability, budgets, timetables of project and application for approval process etc. This RFP will be a guideline for both the school looking for partner and the schools responding to this request.

KCG as a dedicated consulting firm for advisory services to high schools of China on establishing international curriculum / school has helped some Chinese high schools to solicit to potential schools from USA as candidates for partner. KCG helps those schools with drafting RFP and going through the whole process of screening and selecting good partners as their long term collaborations. Many schools from USA are quite satisfied with such assistance on communicating with Chinese high schools with a standardized process and format. As part of internationalizing, RFP and professional management skills in establishing those collaborations with USA schools have educated many Chinese high schools and improved their skills on running a project. That is one of important value propositions KCG is providing.
